expert feedback pt. 2
You learn to recognize what is going on for you if it is being mirrored in your environment
Women in the UK example - anger is not considered to be a feminine emotion, we are socialized from a young age to not be angry. It is more acceptable for boys to express anger. In many different ways, wider society doesn’t allow anger to exist in women. So we may oppress it to such an extent that eventually it leads us to have an explosion
People dont acknowledge their emotions and feelings sometimes because they are not even aware that they have them or have not even been taught to recognize them. So for that reason they are not acceptable. Example, being sad is not okay.
You have to have awareness of something in order to acknowledge it - very often we dont have the awareness in the first place
With thoughts, it’s linked and slightly different. A thought is always on the edge of awareness, unless you have a mental condition that you cant acknowledge it as part of your identity
Some feel inappropriate or even dangerous. There’s something about the world we socialized in at the micro and macro level
The more as we develop and allow ourselves to include everything as a possible part of our experience, the more we may be in touch with our true self (psychosynthesis)
Its the part of ourself that exists regardless of our age or the stage of life that we may be going through, other identities that we identify with - but we all move through the world
“Identity skins” - ethnic background and gender, how you yourself (social class, role) etc. - if we get overly attached to our sense of self being that identity
Attachment to negative experiences serves us in some way, even though the identity skin that we are attached to (may not be obvious that its a helpful one)
For example; anxiety - we could imagine that why have they gotten attachment to being an anxious person
Instead of seeing anxiety as a problem, or something wrong with us - we think of “hang on how is anxiety how is that identity keeping the essential me safe”
Some people unconsciously act from a place “im not worth anything” In therapy - we often try to encourage accessing the unconscious (the thoughts can be telling us a very good story)
Someone who has the thought that they are not worth anything may also have the thought inside of them that they are actually incredible
They are attached to an identity and moving around the world showing the part of themselves that thinks they are worth nothing. There isn’t a truth about these things, where she finds her truth (how does this relate to her own experience, does it resonate with a lived experience)
Someone who is afraid of rejection, what is their relationship with rejection?
Someone who has experienced identity within themselves may be conditioned to believe certain aspects about themselves may have a stronger reaction to the idea of rejection
